Living, and sharing, a healthy lifestyle through self care and bioethically responsible farming.
Life at Diju Farm life is about partaking in a holistic lifestyle; the farm is a place for focusing on ones mental, physical and emotional health, on creating balance and achieving the highest potential of wellbeing for body, mind, and soul. It is about living in harmony with the land, plants and animals by being bioethically responsible. The farm is located on the Trent Canal system on 20 acres in Kirkfield, Ontario. This land is an environmentally sensitive area known as the Carden Plain and provides a home to rare habitats known as alvars. Spring floods and summer droughts occur on a limestone bedrock base with shallow soil known as Kirkfield Loam. Many of the wildflowers, native grasses and invertebrate species found on alvars that normally occur in the western provinces, and many are rare. In spite of the harsh conditions of this land, the Carden Plains are known to produce some of the best growth rates for ranch animals and honey production.
Living a holistic lifestyle, on the farm, means being mindful and content with life. Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. It is about learning to access these qualities, that we already possess, and combine our traits of awareness and acceptance. To be mindful we need to be aware of, and have the ability to, focus on what is happening in our life at the moment. We then need to develop the ability to observe and accept, not judge or avoid, things for what they are. A mindful life, at Diju Farm means accepting the land, weather and other farming issues as they happen. It necessitates preparing for potential problems and issues but not stressing about what might happen and dealing with what does. It involves finding a way that the animals and humans not only do not harm the land but help to improve it and that the land in turns gives back to its full potential. As a result, the livestock also live a very holistic lifestyle by eating a natural diet and living with minimal human intrusion. Because of the peaceful life that occurs on the farm, it is an excellent place to practice mindful meditation. Nothing is as relaxing and pleasurable as spring lambs jumping and playing, a flock of sheep out grazing during an early sunrise or sitting in front of a beehive enjoying the sights and smells of hardworking bees.
A healthy body and lifestyle help support a healthy mind and soul. Like the mental process of garbage in and garbage out, the same occurs with not only what we eat but what our food is also fed and how it grows. Happy animals and well cared for land grow food that we know is also good for us. Animals that are bred for food, or reproduction, deserve the best kind of life the famer can provide. Happy animals grow better and a responsible framer works with the animals and the land. The animals that live at Diju Farm enjoy a lifestyle that is best for their personalities and digestive systems. Grass-fed lamb is some of the healthiest and easiest to digest meats that exist. It has been proven that the pasture raised life and the natural diet of grasses creates a meat that is tender, excellent flavored, high on Omega 3s and low in fats. Poultry and waterfowl are pasture raised and fed a diet of basic simple grains to supplement the natural foraging that they enjoy. Eggs from the birds are tastier and higher in Omega 3s and the meat is richer in flavor and higher in nutrients. Honeybees help to pollinate the local native plants while collecting their nectar to create wonderful healthy wildflower honey. Finally, plants grown on the farm not only enjoy the natural pollination services of the local bee hives but they also benefit from the fertilization of manures from the other animals resulting in healthy, naturally fertilized fruits and vegetables.
Living in harmony with the land and animals is an amazing spiritual experience. Whether one believes in a higher being or not, finding peace in one’s life is one that needs nurturing. Diju Farm is a parcel of land that that is fondly referred to a ‘my little peace of heaven’. As soon as I set foot on the land, I knew I was home and I have had many others comment on the feelings that they receive from this place. For some, heaven is about looking pretty, golden gates, easy living and so much more for others it is about feeling at ease and being ‘home’.
